The British Virgin Islands

Road Town Tortola British Virgin IslandsLocated 60 miles east of Puerto Rico at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, this archipelago of 40 islands and cays is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Renowned for its natural beauty and unrivalled sailing waters, the British Virgin Islands is a nature-lover’s playground. Spend your weekends sailing to laid-back out-islands or remote anchorages; snorkel coral reefs and scuba dive underwater wrecks; or take up active pursuits like windsurfing, kite-boarding, and sport fishing. On land, sporting and social opportunities abound, including football, rugby, running, cycling and cricket, as well as dramatic societies, chorales, community service clubs, and churches.

The BVI’s population of 28,000 lives mostly on the main island of Tortola. Sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada have smaller populations. Approximately half of the population is native to the BVI; others are ex-pats, including a large number from other Caribbean islands. The result is a dynamic and diverse society.

The British Virgin Islands is a good place for families, with both government-run and private schools catering to children from pre-school to secondary level. A modern hospital in the capital city of Road Town is complemented by a number of private health clinics. Suitable high-quality accommodations, many newly built, can be found for every taste. The BVI is easily accessible by air through hubs in Puerto Rico, Antigua, and Barbados.

The BVI is a low-tax jurisdiction, with employee tax of just 8 percent.
