As we become increasingly aware of the catastrophic impact our use of plastic is having on the world’s oceans, Harneys has radically re-evaluated its plastic and paper use.
An anti-plastic committee has been established with a commitment to the demise of single-use disposable plastic in our Hong Kong office. Simple changes which have been recently implemented include a ban on plastic straws, disposable cutlery, coffee cups and plates; a pilot BYO-lunchbox scheme; a commitment to plastic-free catering for Harneys events and the introduction of thorough recycling bins in the office.
We are also developing eco-friendly branded marketing items including a BYO-lunch bag, BYO-coffee cup and BYO stainless steel straws to further reduce our individual plastic footprint. These simple changes have already led to a reduction in the use of plastic across the office and has brought much needed awareness to the issue. Although we are in the early stages of the initiative, it is exciting to see how committed the whole office is to change and a reduction in their use of disposable plastic and we will keep you updated with our progress as we continue to implement small changes at Harneys.
We recently had the pleasure of hosting a lunchtime Q&A session with Claire Yates and Angela Cheng of Eco Drive to discuss Hong Kong’s waste problem. Eco Drive is a non-profit organisation founded in November 2017 by 11 amazing women who are championing change in Hong Kong corporations and schools through educational film screenings and advice on how to reduce single-use plastic. We throw away over 5 million plastic bottles per day here in Hong Kong and it’s a crisis that affects us all. The facts are staggering and can seem overwhelming, but the ethos at Eco Drive is to “Start Small, Start Now” and this nicely sums up how we, as responsible individuals and corporations, can become part of the anti-plastic movement now in Hong Kong. Harneys is excited to have started its own eco drive: when will you start yours?
