That’s a wrap: Singapore Cross Border Litigation & Restructuring Seminar

On Tuesday 20 November, Harneys inaugural Singapore Cross Border Litigation & Restructuring Seminar took place at Maxwell Chambers.

The day started with a bang with a demonstration of an urgent BVI Ex-Parte Application for a worldwide freezing injunction. The case of Total Assets Ltd v Sinn Sisamouth (a notorious fraudster) and Smoke and Mirrors Ltd was heard by top barrister Steven Thompson QC  acting as Offshore Judge who kept Harneys’ Ian Mann on his toes while he made submissions on behalf of the applicant.

Second on the agenda was a panel discussion with Josh Taylor  (FTI), Andrew Payne (DLA) and Meiyen Tan (Oon & Bazul) discussing ‘Restructuring market trends & current challenges in Singapore’.

After a short coffee break, the mock-court demonstration resumed to determine if the Court was misled at the Ex-Parte stage. Andrew Johnstone counsel for the fraudster took the stage in the BVI Inter-Parties hearing in front of Steven Thompson QC as Offshore Judge and Ian Mann on behalf of the applicant. The facts of the case kept the audience engaged throughout the court room proceeding and the banter between the advocates and Judge was highly entertaining.

Last but not least, Chew Xiang (Rajah & Tann) and Ramesh Kumar (Allen & Gledhill) held a panel discussion on ‘Singapore Litigation in a cross border context’, which was followed by several questions from the audience who then enjoyed a networking cocktail reception.

Thank you to all the panelists and attendees of our event and after some flattering feedback, we are already looking forward to a bigger and better day in 2019.
