BVI Litigation and Insolvency practice
Kimberly Crabbe-Adams and Romane Duncan, members of our BVI Litigation and Insolvency practice, were adjudicators for the Inter-Secondary School Debate.
Cedar International School (CIS) walked away with the win against defending champions Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS).
CIS’s team which consisted of Amelia Adamson, Hailey Chomiak, and Ali Taraby argued in favour of the moot: Blacklisting Caribbean financial centres is a modern form of colonialism. Eusa Adams, Jordan Dawson, and Alexia Penn of ESHS were on the opposing team argued against the moot.
Cayman recruitment drive
As part of our Cayman recruitment drive, our Cayman HR team along with staff members of different levels and areas of the business participated in two career expos over the past few weeks.
They had the pleasure of connecting with and informing hundreds of local students about the student programmes and opportunities that are offered by Harneys.
The Expos took place on Friday 21 February and Thursday 05 March 2020.

Cross Island Relay
Our Cayman office entered Team Transactional and Team Litigation in the Cross Island Relay yesterday.
Out of 89 teams, Team Litigation came 31st and Team Transactional came 63rd.
Thomas Gray ran the fastest time for Harneys at 27:05 followed VERY closely by Will Peake at 27:34.
Well done to everyone who took part, especially Ally Clynes who ran two stages and Olivia Shanks who ran the whole thing!

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
We are proud to sponsor the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Youth Parliament programme in Cayman for the fourth year. The event, which invites high school and college students to debate on issues facing the jurisdiction, is due to take place in March.
FLPS "Winners Read and Readers Win"
Our BVI office celebrated over 50 student participants at the annual FLPS "Winners Read and Readers Win" - Reading Competition, on 20 January 2020 at the Francis Lettsome Primary School.
Students from kindergarten to 6th grade were given certificates, book prizes, and awards based on the number of books read during the six-week competition, launched during "Reading is Fun Week" in October, 2019.
This week we are highlighting Rachel Graham, a partner in our London Corporate practice group, as part of our Women in Business Series.
Rachel regularly advises on all aspects of corporate and commercial law including AIM listings, corporate restructurings, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures.
FSN BVI food drive
Our BVI office held their annual holiday FSN BVI food drive. Our Chairman Peter Tarn delivered the food and essential items to FSN on behalf of the firm. All of the donations go directly towards individuals and families in our community affected by domestic violence.
We also hosted an internal toy drive for the Tree of Hands. Last year the non-profit organization donated more than 2,000 toys to 1,200 children throughout the BVI.
NCVO Children Services Programme
On 16 December our Cayman team participated in the NCVO Children Services Programmes Annual Toy Drive for the fifth consecutive year, by embracing the spirit of giving. Presents were purchased and gifted to the children of the Nadine Andreas Residential Foster Home. This organization provides support and security for children in need and is the only residential care facility of its kind in the Cayman Islands.

Francis Lettsome Primary School
On 9 November, Harneys visited Francis Lettsome Primary School to read folktales and holiday stories to the students. We also donated eight Whisper Phones to the school, which is a device used to assist children with their phonological awareness, a crucial step in learning how to read.
@pawbvi Corporate quiz
On 10 December our team of quizzers won the @pawbvi Corporate quiz for the fifth time in a row!
The event which was held at The Rooftop by @brandywineestaterestaurant, raised a total of US$3000 which goes directly towards covering the charity's vet bill.
PAW BVI is a non-profit organization that runs a spay/neuter and release program. They also organize fosters, facilitate adoptions and pay for urgent veterinary treatment when needed.
This week we are highlighting Nancy Erotocritou, a partner in our Cyprus Banking and Finance group, as part of our Women in Business Series. Nancy has experience across a range of practice areas including banking and finance, capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions.
Over the years Nancy has also held a number of positions as a non-executive director on the board of directors of companies listed on regulated markets.
BVI Financial Services Week Committee
The BVI Financial Services Week Committee hosted a wide range of activities that Harneys team members took part in.
The highlights of the week included: - A 5k Fun Run in Road Town. - A students vs the industry debate night, the students walked away with the win! Our very own Jermaine Case was recognized as “best speaker” for the industry team. - A Career Fair at Noel Lloyd Park. - BVI Financial Services Gala Awards Dinner.
This week we are highlighting Marisa Efstathiou Petevi, a fiduciary associate in our Cyprus office, as part of our Women in Business Series.
Marisa graduated from Coventry University with an LLB Law degree and went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law in Bristol. After 4 years in the UK, she moved back to Cyprus in 2014 and immediately joined our team.
Crisis Centre Jingle Bell Run
On 1 December 2019, Harneys Cayman sponsored a water stop at the annual Crisis Centre Jingle Bell Run. All of the proceeds go directly to the Cayman Crisis Centre, an organization that provides safe shelter and hope for a life free from violence to women and their children.
Rosa Romero, Kathy Quintana-Gonzalez, Michelle Bolingbroke, and Shannon Pollard volunteered at the water stop along with Sydney, their furry mascot.
BVI Half Marathon
On 30 November, Harneys staff participated in the BVI Half Marathon which was organized in accordance with international competition regulations of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) under the supervision of the BVI Athletics Association.
Stuart Cullen, Ellie Crespi, Paul Mellor, Clifton Struiken and Sarah Bolt all completed the grueling 13.1-mile race, congratulations to Clifton Struiken on his second-place finish which only took him 1:18:31 overall!
Corporate Service Provider of the Year
Harneys is proud to announce that we have been named Corporate Service Provider of the Year, Litigation Practice of the Year, and Tech Savvy Firm of the Year, at the BVI Financial Services Gala Awards Dinner. We also won Best Corporate Social Responsibility award, and were recognised for our lifetime service to the BVI. For the individual category, Shané Rhymer, Harneys Compliance Officer, and MLRO, tied with T’sa Hodge of Ogier for Compliance Officer of the Year.
Harneys is proud to announce the appointments of two Caymanians to our Articles of Clerkship Programme - Natasja Levy and Moesha Ramsay-Howell.
Harneys offers a structured training programme, through which our articled clerks have the opportunity to work with leading offshore practitioners not only in the Cayman Islands but throughout our global network. Both Articled Clerks will undertake seats, between two and six months, in litigation, banking and finance, investment funds and private wealth. Each Articled Clerk is assigned a mentor who provides them with support and guidance throughout their articles, as well as a supervisor for each seat.

Gifts of Joy program
On 4 November 2019, our Harneys team in Singapore participated in the Gifts of Joy program which is organized by the CapitaLand Commercial Trust Community Activities.
This program involves spreading joy to underprivileged youths, this year they are aiming to involve a total of 781 students.
Manatees Corporate Cup
Harneys BVI office participated in the Manatees Corporate Cup on 2 November, organized by the Manatees Youth Football Program. There were a total of 16 players from Harneys, making up a total of two teams. The teams had such a great time they have decided to start a regular 7-a-side football team.
In between the corporate matches, there were youth showcase matches which impressed all spectators with the teams’ talent and determination.
We didn’t win but we loved taking part and supporting a great cause for youth football. The event raised a total of $8,000, all of which will go towards repairing the pitch. #football #soccer #getactive #getinvolved
Reading is Fun week
Harneys staff participated in Reading is Fun week by reading to the students of the Francis Lettsome Primary School. The children actively listened to and even engaged in a Q&A segment. To encourage reading and literacy, Harneys has also launched the "Winners Read and Readers Win competition" at the FLPS.

Hong Kong Blue Tie Ball
Harneys was proud to be a gold sponsor of the Hong Kong Blue Tie Ball on Saturday 7 September 2019. National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands
Harneys BVI volunteered with the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands at the J. R. O'Neal Botanical Gardens on Saturday 24 August. Staff helped by clearing debris, raking, collecting garbage, replanting, and assisting with the overall revitalisation of the Gardens.
Steve Higgins & Friends "Evening of Excellence" concert
Harneys was a silver sponsor for the fourth annual Steve Higgins & Friends "Evening of Excellence" concert in Cayman. Funds were raised and donated to the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens and the @c.i.c.s.
Congratulations to Diana DeMercado, who has been selected as the recipient of Harneys’ three-year scholarship to complete her Bachelor of Laws at the Truman Bodden Law School in Grand Cayman.
This scholarship comes with paid professional experience during her school breaks as an intern at Harneys. Once Diana has qualified with her postgraduate qualification she will be eligible to undertake articles of clerkship with the firm, which once complete, will allow her to qualify as an attorney in Cayman.
Each summer Harneys rolls out a variety of internship opportunities to students who are currently enrolled in either secondary education or in a university or postgraduate-level law course.
This year’s Cayman Islands summer internship programme saw 18 participants placed within the firm’s legal, fiduciary and business support teams, where they observed day-to-day operations and earned practical experience.

Harneys staff visited the Francis Lettsome Primary School and participated in their annual Career Day! Lovelin Perez-Mendez (Senior Trust Officer), Natalie Bundy (Associate), and Feliza Fenty (Marketing Coordinator) spoke to young students, ages 9 and 10, about various aspects of their respective jobs. The sessions were filled with interactive discussions and many thoughtful questions by students as they were given information about the various career possibilities.

Isle of Wight Challenge
Congratulations to Sophia Pittaway from our London office who took on the Isle of Wight Challenge, walking 106km around the Isle of Wight in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Harneys Hong Kong office is continuing to find innovative ways to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic. This week the office reduced the number of office bins by 50% and saved the use of 41 plastic bags every day.
Colin Riegels Stepping Down
Harneys has announced that the British Virgin Islands’ Managing Partner Colin Riegels will step down on 30 June 2019 to return to full-time academia. Partner Tanya Cassie-Parker will become the new BVI Managing Partner from 1 July 2019.
Tortola Torture race
On Saturday, April 13, the annual @tortolatorture race was held in the BVI. The gruelling route of 33.74 miles (54 kilometers) circumnavigates Tortola with only 22% on the flat, the rest is on hot and humid hills with 12,000 feet of elevation change.
A big congratulations to the Harneys team who participated, Sarah Bolt and Sarah Thompson from the BVI and Ian Mann and Chai Ridgers who joined all the way from Hong Kong.
The Harneys cheer squad was on the ground for moral support and witnessed the runners sheer determination and perseverance as they each crossed the finish line.

Harneys will inform the first set of applicants on 29 April 2019, as to whether or not their submissions have been accepted. After today, applications will go towards the next deadline provisionally set as 15 October 2019.

Virgin Islands Search and Rescue donation
We are happy to assist Virgin Islands Search and Rescue in their mission of saving lives at sea. Harneys donated $6735.00 towards purchasing equipment for VISAR.
Harneys raised funds that assisted with the @green_vi_bvi Composting Workshops held in the first week of March, 2019. Composting transforms kitchen, garden, and other vegetable waste into a dark, rich, productive soil amendment that gardeners call Black Gold.

Shelter from the Storm
We are excited to announce our partnership with the @caymanislandsredcross to support their “Shelter from the Storm” project by pledging $10,000 over two years. The Cayman Islands Red Cross provides a hurricane shelter, a thrift shop as well as child protection services, first aid training, and other community services to the people of the Cayman Islands.

Hundreds of runners hit the road on Friday evening for the 27th annual 5K Irish Jog, a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and a fundraiser for local charities.

2019 Cross Island Relay
Our Cayman Litigation team competed in the 2019 Cross Island Relay on Sunday. The team placed 30 out of 92 teams.
William Peake, who was the fourth quickest in his group, ran 6.4k in 26:28 minutes and Olivia Shanks ran leg 4 for her team – South Sound A.C. in 24:30 minutes.
