Articled Clerk Training Programme
Harneys offers a structured training programme for aspiring Caymanian lawyers, providing the opportunity to work with leading offshore practitioners in the Cayman Islands and across our global network. We support two distinct pathways to qualification: Articles of Clerkship and Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).
Articles of Clerkship
Our Articled Clerk programme is an 18-month training contract commencing typically each September. Clerks rotate through our core practice areas to build a well-rounded skillset. The practice areas include Dispute Resolution, Banking & Corporate, Investment Funds & Asset Management, Tax & Regulatory and Private Wealth. Upon successful completion of Articles, clerks are eligible for admission as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands.
Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)
For candidates who have passed both SQE1 & SQE2, Harneys offers structured QWE, similar to the Articled Clerk programme, designed to meet the SRA's requirements for QWE. Once admitted to the bar of England and Wales, Caymanians are eligible for admission as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands.
Our Commitment to Your Development
Our trainees have access to the same comprehensive training offered to all our attorneys. This includes sessions on technical legal topics, essential soft skills like presentation and networking, and the commercial issues relevant to practising in an offshore environment. Each trainee is supported by a mentor, a dedicated supervisor in each practice area and a principal who is responsible for the overall training programme.
Applicant Requirements
Applicants for Articles of Clerkship should hold a minimum of a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in their Bachelor of Laws or Graduate Diploma in Law, and at least a Commendation in their postgraduate vocational course (PPC, LPC)
Applicants for Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) must provide evidence of passing SQE1 and SQE2, plus details of any prior QWE to be credited (dates, organisations, supervisors, and nature of work).
