Biography

Aline is a member of the Litigation, Insolvency, and Restructuring team in our Cayman Islands office. Aline specialises in complex, cross-border, financial and corporate disputes, many of which relate to distressed debt and distressed events.

Aline is a member of the Litigation, Insolvency, and Restructuring team in our Cayman Islands office. Aline specialises in complex, cross-border, financial and corporate disputes, many of which relate to distressed debt and distressed events.

Aline’s practice focusses on a wide variety of offshore dispute resolution and insolvency based in the Cayman Islands, including complex, cross-border litigation, contentious restructuring and cross-border insolvency, fraud and asset recovery, shareholder and investment funds disputes, corporate investigations in relation to the prevention of dissipation of offshore assets, recovery of debt and assets and employee or stakeholder wrongdoing, contractual claims and enforcement of foreign judgments in the Cayman Islands. Aline also has experience in fair value appraisal disputes pursuant to s238 of the Cayman Islands Companies Act.

Prior to joining Harneys in 2023, Aline was an associate in the Hong Kong Dispute Resolution team at another offshore law firm. Before that, Aline was an associate at Bird & Bird LLP in London and Hong Kong, and an associate and trainee solicitor at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in London and New York.

Aline is a member of the International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) and Co-Chair of Sponsorships at IWIRC Cayman. She is also a member of the International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency & Bankruptcy Professionals (INSOL International).

Representing New Frontier Health Corporation in section 238 appraisal proceedings determining the fair value of shares held by dissenting shareholders post-merger (trial of which is due to commence in late 2026).

Representing Sina Corporation in section 238 appraisal proceedings determining the fair value of shares held by dissenting shareholders post-merger (trial of which was held in March 2025).

Representing a large Chinese property development company in winding-up proceedings relating to alleged oppressive conduct within a quasi-partnership structure (trial of which is expected to take place in 2026).

Advising a global packaging and distribution conglomerate in relation to the enforcement of an arbitration award against assets in the Cayman Islands and obtaining ex parte freezing relief in relation to the same.

Representing a Singapore-based private equity fund in a shareholder dispute against a former employee in Grand Court proceedings in the Cayman Islands.

Representing Malaysian and Australian high net worth individuals in an appeal before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in December 2021 in a complex, multi-jurisdictional shareholders’ dispute.

Representing Malaysian and Australian high net worth individuals in a complex multi-jurisdictional shareholders’ dispute in the BVI Commercial Court with interested parties based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Contentious Restructuring and Insolvency

Advising a subsidiary of a Chinese multinational technology company regarding its interests as a creditor in winding-up proceedings against a global luxury online retailer.

Advising VPC Impact Acquisition Holdings II, a SPAC entity, in relation to a number of shareholder disputes and subsequent liquidation proceedings.

Advising Pioneer Merger Corp., a SPAC entity, in resolving a number of shareholder e. Successfully facilitated settlements across the US and Cayman Islands, obtaining Chapter 15 relief in the US and subsequent liquidation proceedings in the Cayman Islands.

Advising a global energy company in relation to defending winding-up proceedings in the Cayman Islands.

Advising on the contentious restructuring of US$22.7 billion in offshore liabilities in a high-profile and high-value global restructuring process of one of China’s largest property development companies throughout 2021/2022.

Advising Hong Kong’s largest property development company in successful and highly contested applications for the appointment of liquidators over a British Virgin Islands joint venture company against a large Chinese property development company.

Advising on a number of complex creditor schemes of arrangement in the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands involving the restructuring of various distressed companies and bondholders based in China and Hong Kong.
